Look out Spokane, the Canuck's are coming!

02/04/2010

Congratulations to the Kelowna Pee Wee Canuck's on winning their second of 2 tournaments this year. Competing in the North Okanagan Nights Tournament in Armstrong/Enderby the Canucks worked through the round robin series outscoring opponents 36 - 3 on their way to the number 1 seed entering the playoff round.

However, the Canuck's were not complacent, knowing their challenge lie in front of them. Up first was the Penticton Predators. The Canuck's had to face adversity with 2 players sick. One out and unable to play, the other "... playing through it ..."  The Canucks's managed to outshoot the Pred's and despite a hot goalie, battled clear through to the final against the Langley Snipers. The Sniper's just got by KMHA's own Pee Wee Avalanche (Congrat's Avalanche - we were looking for ya) in the other semi-final game.

In the final, the Canuck's let the Snipers build a 4 - 1 lead heading into the third period. Certainly the Canuck's biggest challenge during this tournament, they managed to score 8 goals in the final frame to take the tournament final 9 - 5. A third period that showed their character to rise up to the challenge sending Langley home wondering what could have been. Congratulations Canuck's on a come from behind victory to take the NOMHA Pee Wee tournament trophy (and what a trophy!).

Fripp Warehousing Tier 1 Jr. Rockets great ambassadors for the International Stage

01/28/2010

Kelowna Minor Hockey Association was proud to be able to assist the Swedish Olympic Female Hockey team in their training schedule for the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.  The Kelowna Jr. Rockets Midget Tier 1 team took on the Swedish team in a friendly match at Kelowna’s Memorial Arena on Tuesday, January 26.  A great crowd was on hand to welcome the Swedish team to Kelowna and to cheer on all of the players as they showed some fantastic skills.  The Midget Tier 1 team had to get their skating skills into high gear to compete with the amazing speed of the Swedish team.  This team is currently ranked 3rd in the world with a goaltender that is touted as the best in her field.  The Swedish team players range in age from 19 to 34 years of age and are carrying several Olympians with 3 and 4 Olympic performances to their credit.  The Midget Tier 1 team had to adjust quickly to a completely different style of play with no body checking allowed.  Coach Peter Elander from the Swedish team and Brent Gilchrist from the Tier 1 Rockets ensured all players were aware of the magnitude of the importance that the appropriate rules were followed.  The boys showed great sportsmanship, followed the rules of the IIHF and won the game by a score of 3-0.  The Swedish team was extremely pleased with the level of play of the boys and had a game that they felt was both fun and beneficial to their rigorous training schedule.

Kelowna Minor Hockey Association and the Kelowna Fripp Warehousing Jr. Rockets Midget Tier 1 team would like to say a sincere “Thank you” to Team Sweden for an extremely memorable experience and we wish you luck on the Olympic Stage.
