2017 Kelowna Minor Hockey AGM Announcement
- 2017 KMHA Board Nominations*
A reminder to all KMHA members that our 2017 AGM will be held at 6:30 pm, May 30th, 2017 at the Ramada Kelowna Hotel and Conference Center. As communicated previously, we have five (5) board positions to be filled at the AGM. They include the following;
• First Vice President responsible for Bantam and Midget House
• Third Vice President responsible for Initiation and Novice
• Risk Management and Safety Director
• Two (2) additional Directors with one focused on the female divisions
To date, the following five members have put their names forward to be nominated at the AGM;
Scott Millard – 1st Vice President
My oldest son finished his second year of initiation and my youngest will be entering the system in 2018. I am looking to hold a long-standing position with the organization and believe my background in operations management and finance would be an asset to the board. I also currently serve on the board of directors for the Kelowna Family Center a non-profit counselling service in the city. I spent last season coaching Initiation team 6 and assisted in the organization of the year end jamboree for our players. I have applied to coach my sons Novice team next year and also hope to return to initiation once my youngest enters the system.
Kelly Olson – 3rd Vice President
Over the last couple of years, I have enjoyed my time as the Initiation Director for the 2014/2015 season and then as the Novice – Evans Director for the 2015/2016 season. During this time I have met many families in the hockey community and have come to love working with the players of our future. Originally from Calgary, my husband and I chose to relocate our family to the Okanagan as we were hoping to be able to become actively involved in our children’s school and extra-
curricular activities as they got older rather than spending most our lives commuting to and from work.
Hockey has always been an active part of my life, from the time I was first born growing up with a father who loved to play goal, to watching my brother play, then my husband and now both of my kids. In my free time, you can normally catch me at a rink watching our local teams play.
I believe the love for any sport starts at the beginning and having the opportunity to work closely with the Initiation/Novice divisions will allow me to share my love of the sport as well as watch the young players grow within the KMHA family.
Janis McAfee – Risk Management & Safety
Janis McAfee is a Hockey Mom and a Kelowna based lawyer with Dolden Wallace and Folick LLP specializing in the area of insurance law. Janis is completing her second year of a two-year term with KMHA as the Association’s Director responsible for safety and risk management. Janis lead the recent review of the Association’s Constitution and By Laws and is a member of the Appeals Sub Committee. Janis is prepared to stay in the role of the Association’s Risk Management and Safety Director for a further year.
Dan MacLeod – Director at Large – Female Division
My name is Dan MacLeod and I would like to put my name forward at this year’s AGM for the Board Member at Large Female hockey position. In addition to coaching boys and girls for the last few years in both Novice and Atom, I have been sitting on the current board of KMHA directors for the past 2 years as 3rd Vice President- Initiation/Novice. I am quite proud of some of the initiatives that KMHA has implemented in these divisions over the last 2 years, namely the move to small ice with the full rink boards. This will no doubt contribute to better development in our younger players and goalies.
This past season I was also quite involved in the female program and feel that we made some big strides this year, particularly with helping to create female leagues for our Atom and Peewee house female teams. The feedback received throughout the year was very positive and I know we can use the momentum from this season to make next year even better. We were also able to bring back the Female
Recreational Tournament in March and by all accounts it was successful and we are looking to make it bigger and better next year. With a dedicated board member for female hockey, I am confident that we will be able to focus more attention throughout the whole female program and with input from our membership, look at ways for improving the development of our female players as well as the experience for the families.
This past year has been very rewarding and I am very excited about the upcoming season. We have a great executive director in place as well as a great head coach and feel that we are in very good hands with them. Our Board of Directors worked very well together this past year and I’d really like to continue to be a part of this group to deliver the best possible hockey program for our sons and daughters.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the KMHA AGM May 30th.
Kelly McKenzie – Director at Large
Kelly moved to Kelowna 3 years ago from Alberta. One of our most dedicated officials both on and off the ice, Kelly’s time spent at the rink each year is invaluable to the development of our younger officials. His experience from Minor through Junior in BC and Alberta gives him a strong understanding of the game, expectations of fans, coaches, players, and officials.
If anyone else is interested in running for one of the five positions, please email email@example.com no later than Monday May 22nd. We look forward to seeing a great turn out on May 30th.Steve Smith and Bob Henderson KMHA Executive Director / President KMHA
